Giulio Cesare is undoubtedly one of Handel’s finest works, but it is primarily about love rather than a true historical representation. In most operatic works, political conflicts thwart passions, but here opposing reasons of state foster the blossoming and development of the most tender feelings. The librettist delights in placing ever more obstacles in the path of love and Handel responds with some of his finest music. A cast experienced in this repertoire comes together to deliver this ode to love with panache and flair.
